Botanical Illustration Card | Horse Chestnut
Inspired by Victorian botanical illustrations and vintage apothecary style this beautiful Horse Chestnut / Aesculus Hippocastanum drawing is one of a set of eight greeting card designs. It is printed on a crisp white background and comes with a craft envelope.
Although common across the UK, the Horse chestnut is native to the Balkan peninsula and was first introduced from Turkey in the late 16th century. The white and pink flowers bloom in May and conkers fall in autumn. It is great for wildlife as the flowers provide a rich source of nectar and pollen to insects, particularly bees. Caterpillars of the triangle moth feed on its leaves, as well as the horse chestnut leaf miner moth, whose caterpillars provide food for blue tits. Deer and other mammals also eat the conkers.
